Nunatsiavut Assembly and Members
The Labrador Inuit parliament is known as the Nunatsiavut Assembly . The function of the assembly is to represent Labrador Inuit and to ensure governance of Nunatsiavut by Labrador Inuit under the Labrador Inuit Constitution. It provides a forum for considering important issues to Labrador Inuit and to government, debate, making laws and overseeing the actions of the Executive Council. The Nunatsiavut Assembly consists of no fewer than 16 Inuit, including ordinary members of the Assembly, the AngajukKâk of each Inuit Community Government, the Chair of each Inuit Community Corporation and the President of Nunatsiavut.

The President and members of the Nunatsiavut Assembly are elected for four-year terms. The President chairs the Nunatsiavut Executive Council meetings. The Speaker, who is elected by the Assembly, presides over the Nunatsiavut Assembly.

Since the Constitution came into effect, the Nunatsiavut Assembly increased the number of constituencies to 8. These include Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Rigolet, Postville, North West River the combined constituency of Happy Valley - Goose Bay and Mud Lake. There is also a constituency for Canada, to provide for representation for all Inuit citizens resident in places in Canada other than the first eight constituencies*.

At present, there will be 2 members for Nain, 1 for Hopedale, 1 for Makkovik, 1 for Postville, 1 for Rigolet, 2 for Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Mud Lake, 1 for Northwest River, and 1 for Canada.

In addition to these ordinary members, there will the AngajukKâk of each of the five Inuit Community Government, the Chair of the North West River Inuit Community Corporation and the Chair of the Happy Valley - Goose Bay and Mud Lake Inuit Community Corporation. The number of members in the first elected Nunatsiavut Assembly, including the President, is anticipated to be 18.

*Each constituency with a population of 1000 or less is to have one ordinary member. If the population exceeds 1000, the constituency will have 2 ordinary members. The maximum number of assembly members per constituencies is 4.
