Economic Development
The Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement brings certainty about jurisdiction over lands. This certainty creates a stable environment in which development in northern Labrador can flourish. The Nunatsiavut Government intends to use the provisions of the Land Claims Agreement, and its new role as a government partner in Canada, to create opportunities and long-term benefits for Inuit and Inuit communities, on Labrador Inuit terms.
The Agreement commits the provincial government to consult the Nunatsiavut Government in developing economic development policies, plans, programs and services that will apply to the Settlement Area. Consultation will consider Inuit interests and the promotion of training, employment and business opportunities for Inuit. Both the provincial and federal governments have committed to providing fair opportunities to Inuit competing for government employment and contracts.
The department will guide economic development of new initiatives for the Nunatsiavut Government. Working closely with other departments, such as Lands and Natural Resources, the department will help determine best opportunities and use of Inuit resources in fishing, mining, tourism, technology and more. The Land Claim Agreement establishes Nunatsiavut Government's ownership of natural resources, and allows for unique revenue arrangements. Impact and Benefits Agreements have been negotiated for key areas, including the Voisey's Bay Project and Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve. While the IBAs are managed in other departments, the potential for new economic development with these and other initiatives are always under review for new opportunities.
