Education
Education and training initiatives are a priority for the Nunatsiavut Government. Education empowers individuals to evaluate the choices before them and select career paths that lead to enriched lives and successful communities.
This priority is evident in the emphasis placed on education through our long standing Post Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP ), and the more recent Inuit Pathways training program. Innovative partnerships with Labrador Inuit Development Corporation's subsidiaries continue to provide training and employment opportunities for Inuit. This experience was again realized through the Inuit Impacts and Benefits Agreement (IBA) with Voisey's Bay Nickel Company. Less than one year into operation of the Voisey's Bay mine, Inuit are employed in every aspect of the mine/mill operations.
Under the Agreement, Nunatsiavut Government has the
authority to assume responsibility for the entire education
system in Inuit communities. Before doing so, we will be examining
the current curriculum to see what works, and what we can do
differently to better reflect Labrador Inuit needs.
