Health and Social Development
The Department incorporates a holistic approach to health care, recognizing the specific challenges facing Labrador Inuit while respecting Labrador Inuit traditions. The department inherited seven core programs from the former Labrador Inuit Health Commission – Mental Health, Addictions, Community Health & Communicable Disease Control, Child Care & Child Development, Home & Community Care, Environmental Health, and Non-Insured Health Benefits. Under our Agreement, Nunatsiavut Government has the authority to assume a greater role in healthcare. The department is reviewing which services and program currently delivered by provincial and federal governments will be better delivered by Nunatsiavut Government.
Annual regional health conferences promote community awareness, consultation, involvement and control in all health matters, including the development and delivery of health programs. Social development programs and services will also integrate those provided in other departments, such as the community healing initiative in the Nunatsiavut Secretariat.
