Inuit Community Governments
and Corporations
There will be Inuit Community Governments in Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet. These new political and administrative entities will have greater responsibilities and authority than other municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador. A maximum of 25% of the seats on the Inuit Community Governments are reserved for non-Inuit. The AngajukKâk (Chairperson) must be Inuk.
In areas where significant numbers of Inuit live outside Nunatsiavut, non-profit Inuit Community Corporations will be established to provide beneficiaries the opportunity to participate in self-government. Each shall have an elected executive who are accountable to Inuit beneficiaries in their constituency. Two Inuit Corporations will be elected in the fall of 2006. There will be an Inuit Community Corporation for beneficiaries residing in North West River and Sheshatshiu. The second corporation will be for beneficiaries residing in Happy valley-Goose Bay and Mud Lake. Provisions are in the Agreement for the creation of a constituency to represent Inuit residing elsewhere in the country.
The AngajukKâk of each Inuit Community Government and the chairperson of each Inuit Community Corporation automatically have a seat in the Nunatsiavut Assembly, and responsible for representing their constituencies therein. In this way, all beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement in Canada are represented.
