Message from the Minister
Labrador and Nunatsiavut are home to many natural resources. Some of these we have been using for generations and will use for many more generations. And some resources have a limited life and may only be used by a few generations. Our job at the Department of Land and Natural Resources is to protect our renewable resources and gain the maximum benefit from our non-renewable resources while minimizing the impact on human well-being, our cultural heritage and the natural environment. We are doing that through planning and using Labrador Inuit values as a guide.
As a people, Labrador Inuit have a special relationship with the land and natural resources. The land, water, and sea ice have sustained us. And they can continue to sustain us if we are careful with what happens during development and with our own habits as well. Our land and resources will likely become more and more attractive to industry. We will make sure our land remains attractive to Labrador Inuit who want to remain in Nunatsiavut as well.
As Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, I want to tell women that the Nunatsiavut Government is aware of challenges you face and opportunities you have. This government wants each Labrador Inuit beneficiary, male or female, to enjoy the benefits of self-governance and the sense of pride, self-determination and opportunity that comes with that. I will be working to see that this happens. |
