Parks and Protected Areas
Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve
The Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve of Canada was created as a result of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, and will be Canada's newest National Park. An Inuit Impacts and Benefits Agreement has been negotiated with Canada. It provides for Inuit participation in management of the National Park, Training, employment and business opportunities, directing research, and ecosystem management.
Mealy Mountains National Park Feasibility Study
The Nunatsiavut Government sits on the Steering Committee for the Mealy Mountains Nation Park Feasibility Study. Open Houses were held in 2006 in each of the adjoining communities, including Rigolet, to gather public input regarding the proposed Park boundaries and the traditional activities that are undertaken within the Park study area.

Protected Areas
Protected areas in Labrador Inuit Lands will be established by the Nunatsiavut Government, which has the power to make laws in relation to the establishment, use and operation of protected areas in Labrador Inuit Lands. The Nunatsiavut Government must consult the provincial and federal governments before establishing a protected area in Labrador Inuit Lands.
If the federal or provincial government wants to establish a protected area in Labrador Inuit Lands it must get the agreement of the Nunatsiavut Government. If there is no agreement they can still expropriate the land that is needed in accordance with the expropriation provisions of the chapter on Land and Non-Renewable Resources.
Generally, if there is a conflict between an Inuit law about protected areas in Labrador Inuit Lands and a federal or provincial Law it is the Inuit law that must be followed but if the conflict is between an Inuit law and federal or provincial law in relation to critical habitat of species at risk, it is the federal or provincial law that must be followed.
