Voisey's Bay Mine and Mill

IBA

A condition of Labrador Inuit consenting to mineral development in Nunatsiavut prior to the Land Claims Agreement, an Inuit Impacts and Benefits Agreement (IIBA) was required with Voisey's Bay Nickel Company Ltd. (VNBC). An agreement was reached, and includes provisions for an Environmental Monitoring Partnership , the creation of the Tasiujatsoak Committee to oversee the ongoing relationship between the VNBC and LIA/Nunatsiavut Government, provisions for Inuit Harvesting Compensation, and the creation of the Nunatsiavut Business Centre. Its role is to provide training, loan funding, and advice to Nunatsiavut beneficiaries who wish to start or expand a business. The not-for-profit organization was established to promote and facilitate the creation and growth of Inuit businesses.

Shipping Agreement
A complementary agreement to the IIBA, the Shipping Agreement was signed with Voisey's Bay Nickel Company in 2005. The purpose of this agreement is to address issues of concern to Inuit with respect to the winter shipping activity associated with the Voisey's Bay Mine and Mill. The Agreement establishes rules and procedures for open water shipping as well as the winter shipping season during all phases of the Voisey's Bay Project and provides for Inuit involvement in the planning, environmental management, and decision-making processes with respect the Voisey's Bay Nickel Company's needs for shipping.
