Makkovik is located on the north coast of Labrador at the mouth of Kaipokok (meaning "frothy water") Bay. It is northeast of the community of Postville and approximately 200 kilometres north of Happy Valley - Goose Bay.

Economic Activity and Potential

With a population of 380 people, Makkovik relies mostly on the snow crab fishery and Torngat Regional Fish Producers Co-op as its main source of employment. With this well established fish plant operation, there is clearly more potential to harvest under-utilized species available in the region. The regional economic development board has identified a well-developed handicraft operation and Makkovik is being considered as a base for developing a regional handicraft producers' organization. Currently the local craft shop is one of the best stocked in the area and sells raw materials to craftspersons all along the coast.

Makkovik was recently the site of a significant archeological find. Remains of the first missionary house established by the Moravians in 1752 were located just outside of the community in Nisbets Harbour which is now known as Ford's Bight. A small museum tells the history of the Moravian church in the locality.

Municipal Services and Infrastructure

There are two churches in Makkovik, Pentecostal and Moravian. Lodging is available with food and bar service at the Adlavik Inn. There is also a two-bedroom bed and breakfast in the town.

J.C. Erhardt Memorial School is a newly built, modern educational facility. The community of Makkovik is governed by a seven-member elected council.
