Restructuring
The transitional government is overseeing the transformation of former Labrador Inuit agencies and institutions. They have been dismantled and remolded into entities that better align with the authorities and responsibilities provided by the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and Labrador Inuit Constitution. In certain areas, entirely new entities have been created to reflect the vision of our Agreement. Nunatsiavut Government consists of five departments:

Nunatsiavut Secretariat
The Nunatsiavut Secretariat is responsible for the workings of the Executive Council, intergovernmental affairs, communications, the community healing initiative, and cultural affairs. It includes a Community Healing Coordinator. This department is responsible for Inuttitut interpretations and translations, and for language and culture through the Torngâsok Cultural Centre.

Department of Nunatsiavut Affairs
The Department of Nunatsiavut Affairs is responsible for legal services, community justice, public property, beneficiary registration, youth and recreational services and land claims implementation.

Department of Health, Education, Social and Economic Development

Health & Social Development
This department administers all health and social development areas of responsibility for the Nunatsiavut Government. The former Labrador Inuit Health Commission been disbanded and its core programs are now part of the responsibilities of this department.

The Department incorporates a holistic approach to health care, recognizing the specific challenges facing Labrador Inuit while respecting Labrador Inuit traditions.

At present Nunatsiavut Government is reviewing the existing medical heath and social development and care programming delivered by the province. Before efficiencies can be realized, or programs restructured to better meet Labrador Inuit needs, we need to better understand the operations of provincial health and social care programs.

Education
This department funds and administers education through the Post Secondary Student Support Program and Inuit Pathways. In addition, we have the authority to assume control of primary and secondary education. Before we relieve the province of this responsibility, we intend to review the current system, identify problem areas, and work towards a curriculum that better meets the needs of Labrador Inuit.

Economic Development
The department will guide new economic development initiatives for the Nunatsiavut Government. It will work with the Labrador Inuit Development Corporation to coordinate and promote economic development opportunities in Nunatsiavut. The department works with other government departments to ensure training and employment opportunities are maximized from all development in Nunatsiavut.

Department of Lands and Natural Resources
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is responsible for all matters related to the Nunatsiavut Government's role in co-managing both renewable and non-renewable resources. It is also responsible for applying Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement provisions for resource development. The department regulates water management and Inuit water rights, as well as ocean management. It is responsible for implementing both the Voisey's Bay Impacts and Benefits Agreement and the National Parks Impacts and Benefits Agreement. Included in the department's mandate are land management, land use planning, environmental assessment, wildlife, plants and fisheries.

The Minister is also Responsible for the Status of Women.

Department of Finance and Human Resources
The Department of Finance and Human Resources is responsible for all areas pertaining to finance and funding as well as the management of the Nunatsiavut Civil Service. As primarily an administrative department, it supports the delivery of services throughout the Nunatsiavut Government. Senior Management of this department consists of the Deputy Minister of Finance, the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Information Technology.
