The Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and the Labrador Inuit Constitution came into effect at the first Assembly of the Nunatsiavut Transitional Government, held in Nain, on December 1, 2005.
Constructed at a cost of $9.4 million, the Nunatsiavut Assembly Building officially opened in Hopedale on September 4, 2012.
The Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement has 7,206 Beneficiaries. A total of 2,301 Beneficiaries live in Labrador, but outside of Nunatsiavut, and a total of 2,361 live in Nunatsiavut.
The Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement is the only Land Claims Agreement in Atlantic Canada, and it sets the precedent for any future Land Claims Agreement.
